Why Can’t My AC Keep Up When It’s 115°F Outside?

You’ve checked the filter and made sure that the thermostat is set right. The AC is running, but your house is sitting at 82 degrees, and you’re sweating in your own living room. Why can’t your AC keep up?

 

Before you call for emergency service or start pricing new equipment, know that this shouldn’t be an unexpected experience, at least on the hottest days in Las Vegas, just because of how air conditioning systems work.

The Design Temperature Concept

Every AC system is sized according to something called a design temperature (the outdoor high that the system is designed to handle while maintaining a target indoor temperature). In most of Nevada, that’s around 105 to 108°F. The system is sized to keep your home comfortable when it’s 105 outside. When it’s 115 (which happens pretty frequently in Las Vegas during summer), you’ve exceeded what the equipment was designed for. Think of it like a car’s towing capacity. A truck rated to tow 8,000 pounds will struggle with 11,000.

 

This doesn’t mean you simply have to suffer through extreme heat events, but it does mean that on a 115-degree afternoon, your system keeping the house at 78 instead of 72 isn’t necessarily a sign that it’s failing.

When It Means There’s a Problem

The design temperature caveat only applies when your system is working correctly. If your unit can’t keep up on a 105-degree day, it could mean something else entirely. Several AC repair issues can make a system underperform even if the temperature’s not outside of what it was designed to handle.

 

Dirty condenser coil. The outdoor coil needs to dump heat into already-hot desert air. When that coil is caked with dust and debris, it can’t do that very well. A system that was marginal at 105°F last year may not keep your house cool at 100°F this year if the coil hasn’t been cleaned.

 

Low refrigerant. A slow leak reduces your system’s cooling capacity. What started as what was probably a performance reduction you didn’t even notice becomes an inability to maintain setpoint during high-load periods.

 

Degraded ductwork. If 25 to 30% of your conditioned air is leaking into a 150-degree attic before it gets to your rooms, the system is effectively undersized for your home, regardless of what the nameplate shows.

 

An aging compressor. Compressors lose capacity as they age, and that’s most obvious when demand is high. A compressor working at 80% of its original capacity might work just fine on a mild day and struggle during a heat wave.

Is It a Sizing or Equipment Issue?

In some cases, your system might not be cooling your home because it’s not sized correctly. That might have been true when the system was installed or because the house has changed (an addition, new west-facing windows, reduced attic insulation) in ways that increased its cooling load.

 

In this case, the solution is AC replacement with the right-sized equipment. A load calculation performed by a licensed technician will tell you exactly how much cooling capacity your home needs, accounting for square footage, insulation, window orientation, and Las Vegas’s climate.
