Why Bigger Isn’t Better: All About AC Sizing in Las Vegas

When an AC system starts struggling in a Las Vegas summer, your first thought is that if the unit can’t keep up, you should get a bigger one. More tonnage equals more cooling, right? Unfortunately, while that might be true with things like car engines, it doesn’t work the same way in the HVAC world and going bigger is often one of the expensive mistakes a Las Vegas homeowner can make.

What Does “Sized” Mean?

Air conditioning systems are rated in tons, but that has nothing to do with weight. One ton of cooling capacity is the ability to remove 12,000 BTUs of heat per hour. The average Las Vegas home might need anywhere from 3 to 5 tons, depending on its size, construction, insulation, and orientation. The right size is determined by a load calculation (an analysis of everything that contributes to heat gain in the home).

 

When a system is correctly sized, it runs in cycles that are long enough to both cool the air and remove humidity, and it keeps a steady, even temperature throughout the house. That’s not what happens if it’s oversized.

The Oversized Problem

An oversized AC unit cools the air so ast that the thermostat clicks off before the system has run a full cycle, which means that once the unit shuts off prematurely, the temperature creeps back up fast, and the unit turns on again within just a few minutes. This is what’s called “short cycling,” and it’s destructive to your AC system.

 

Every time a compressor starts up, it pulls electrical current and puts mechanical stress on its components. A system that’s sized right might cycle eight to 10 times per day. An oversized system in a Las Vegas home might cycle 24 to 30 times, which means lots more wear.

 

Oversized systems also don’t dehumidify properly. Moisture removal happens over the course of a sustained run cycle as warm, humid air passes across the cold evaporator coil long enough for water vapor to condense out. When the system short-cycles, it never runs long enough to do that, leaving you with air that’s cooled but still uncomfortable.

 

Counterintuitively, an oversized system often leaves some rooms overcooled while others are warmer because the system shuts off before air has time to distribute fully through the ductwork.

Why This Comes Up During Replacement

The oversizing problem comes up most often when homeowners are replacing an aging unit. A technician who doesn’t do a load calculation may just install the same tonnage as the unit being replaced or go one size up if the homeowner tells them the old unit was struggling.

 

If the original system was correctly sized, replacing it with a larger unit trades one set of problems for another. And if the original system was already oversized (common in Las Vegas homes from the 1990s and 2000s), going up another size makes things even worse.

Short cycling, uneven temperatures, humidity that never quite feels right despite a functioning AC, and a compressor that seems to be failing sooner than it should are all signs of an oversized system.
