4 Signs Your Air Conditioning System Needs to Be Serviced

With each year shattering previous heat records, it’s more important than ever before that your home’s air conditioning system is in good working condition. Regular service is critical to this. Without ongoing maintenance, your air conditioner could suffer from additional wear and tear, fail to cool your home, or even fail prematurely. Not sure if your system needs to be serviced? Here are five signs that it’s past time for a little AC TLC.

1. The Air Smells Musty

When your air conditioner is operating, the air blown through the ducts and out the registers in each room should have no smell. However, if you notice that it smells musty or dank, it’s a sign that there’s a problem. Get your AC system serviced as soon as possible. Some of the potential problems that might cause this include water backing up in the drain pan, a dirty air filter, and more.

2. You Hear a Gurgling Sound When the Air Conditioning System Is Operating

If you’re near the indoor air handling unit when it kicks on and you notice a gurgling sound, it’s time to call for air conditioning system service. What you’re hearing is water in the catch pan. In a system that’s functioning properly, water should collect in the catch pan and then flow out through the drain tube. However, if the drain tube is clogged, water cannot drain and will continue to collect in the catch pan. Eventually, it will spill over, which can cause major problems, including electrical shorts, mold growth, and more.

3. You Notice Warm Air Blowing from the Registers

We’ve all been there before. Your air conditioning system is on and running, but it just doesn’t feel like the house is cooling down. It could be due to very high outside temps, but if the air blowing from the registers is warm, the problem is something else entirely. In many cases, this can indicate that your air conditioning system is low on refrigerant and must be topped off. That usually means there’s a leak in the system somewhere, too, which will need to be repaired.

4. Little Air Flowing from the Registers

Hold your hand in front of a register. Is there sufficient airflow coming out to cool the room? With central AC systems, air flow varies depending on how far the register is from the indoor air handler, with those located the farthest away experiencing the slowest airflow. However, if you’re noticing that the flow is lower than normal, it means there’s a problem somewhere in the system. The most likely culprit is a clogged air filter, but there may also be a blockage in the ducts or even a problem with your blower motor.
