AC Repair in Las Vegas

Is Your AC Blowing Warm Air? 4 Things to Check Before Calling a Pro

Few things are more frustrating than turning on your air conditioner on a hot day and feeling warm air coming from the vents. Your AC is running, the thermostat is set, and yet your home isn’t getting any cooler.

Before you assume the worst, take a breath. Warm air doesn’t always mean a major repair or a full system failure. In many cases, the cause is something simple you can check yourself in just a few minutes.

Here are four things you should look at before calling a professional for AC repair.

1. Check Your Thermostat Settings

It sounds obvious, but this is one of the most common causes of warm air. Make sure:

  • Your thermostat is set to Cool, not Heat or Fan
  • The temperature setting is lower than your current room temperature
  • The batteries (if your thermostat uses them) aren’t dead

If the fan is set to “On” instead of “Auto,” it can also blow air continuously, even when the AC isn’t actively cooling. That air can feel warm between cooling cycles.

2. Look at Your Air Filter

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow and make your system struggle. When air can’t move through your system, it may not cool correctly or at all. In some cases, a seriously dirty filter can even make your coils freeze, which means warm air from your vents.

Slide out your filter and take a look:

  • If it’s covered in dust and debris, it’s time to replace it
  • If you can’t remember the last time you changed it, that’s a sign too

Most homes benefit from a filter change every one to three months, but with the dust around Las Vegas, it’s better to replace yours sooner rather than later.

3. Check Your Circuit Breaker

Sometimes the issue isn’t the AC system itself, but the power supply. Your air conditioner has separate electrical components for the indoor and outdoor units. If the outdoor unit loses power but the indoor fan keeps running, you’ll feel warm air blowing.

Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker labeled for your AC or condenser. If it’s tripped:

  • Reset it
  • See if your system starts cooling

If the breaker trips again, don’t keep resetting it. That’s a sign of a more serious electrical issue, and you’ll want an experienced Las Vegas AC technician to inspect it.

4. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit needs space and airflow to do its job. If it’s blocked or dirty, your system can’t release heat the way it’s designed to.

Look for:

  • Leaves, grass, or debris around the unit
  • Plants or shrubs growing too close
  • Visible dirt buildup on the coils

When It’s Time to Call a Pro

If you’ve checked these four things and your AC is still blowing warm air, it’s time to call in the professionals. You could be dealing with a non-DIY problem, like:

  • Refrigerant leaks
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Compressor issues
  • Ductwork problems
